Our team at FEMS 2025

July 18, 2025 / Dr. Ilka Schwittlinsky

This week, our team journeyed to Milan, Italy, to present their recent work at FEMS 2025.

Esteban Gongora stepped in for Anjela Vogel, who unfotunately was not able to join us, and gave a talk entitled "Functional gene redundancy as a response strategy to variable substrate concentrations in marine PAH-degrading Cycloclasticus spp." detailing the work she completed during her Ph.D. under the supervision of Sara Kleindienst at the University of Tübingen.

Sergey Abramov, Anh Van Le and Sahar Babazadeh each presented both a poster and a flash talk on their recent work:

  • Sergey: Versatile microbial community responsible for nitrate turnover in a carbonate aquifer in southwest Germany
  • Anh: Hydrocarbon levels and input frequency shape microbial hydrocarbon degrader assemblages in Helgoland seawater microcosms
  • Sahar: Effect of aeration mode on the activity of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms and nitrous oxide emission in the wastewater treatment plant

Everyone else presented posters of their work:

  • Kate: Adaptable Ochrobactrum sp. GPr1 13 converts pyruvate to lactate under oxic conditions
  • Esteban: Biostimulation improves biodegradation compared to dispersant application in Arctic Ocean oil spill scenarios
  • Ivan: Effect of cationic and anionic surfactants on nitrification rate in activated sludge obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in southwest Germany
  • Olivia: Glyphosate-based herbicide inhibits, while the organic alternative, pelargonic acid, stimulates methane production in anoxic soil microcosms
  • David: Surfactants in glyphosate based herbicides can impact glyphosate biodegradation in anoxic soil microcosms
  • Hermes: Rotating disk reactor microbial community composition and activity contributes to carbon and nitrogen removal efficiency in wastewater treatment
  • Diego: Impact of microbial community on heavy metal removal in the mixing zone of the Río Tinto and Jarama river
