About the Institute
The Institute for Urban Water Engineering, Water Quality, and Waste Management (ISWA) is part of Faculty 2 (Civil and Environmental Engineering) at the University of Stuttgart. It is located at Bandtäle 2 in Stuttgart-Büsnau and is part of the Vaihingen campus. In addition to lecture halls, research laboratories, a library, and staff offices, the ISWA also operates the teaching and research wastewater treatment plant, making the institute unique in Germany.
Its Executive Director is Prof. Dr. Patrick Bräutigam.
The institute is led by the Executive Board and is divided into three chairs: Multiscale Environmental Process Engineering (Prof. Dr. David Werner), Environmental Microbiology (Prof. Sara Kleindienst), and Technical Environmental Chemistry and Sensor Technology (Prof. Patrick Bräutigam).
The KomS – Competence Center for Trace Substances BW (Vera Kohlgrüber) is based at the Chair of Technical Environmental Chemistry and Sensor Technology.
In addition, there is the Central Support Unit, consisting of the Analytical Platform (Dr. Christian Zerfaß), the Baden-Württemberg Analytical Quality Assurance Unit (Dr.-Ing. Frank Baumeister), and the Administrative Office (Daniel Raja-Nigl), as well as the Teaching and Research Wastewater Treatment Plant (Peter Maurer).
History
Already since the beginning of the fifties, when the term "environmental protection" was not yet widespread, the universitary institute has been dealing with the problem areas of water quality, water supply, waste water and waste. The institute founded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Franz Pöpel is today an interdisciplinary institution in which civil engineers, environmental protection technicians, biologists, chemists, food chemists, process engineers, geologists and geographers work.
The main tasks of the institute are research and teaching as well as the support of federal and state authorities, municipalities and industry in solving environmentally relevant problems. This can be achieved, for example, by external investigations of existing plants or pilot plants or by collecting the basic data for the conception and planning of plants on a labor scale.
The institute is headed by the Board of Directors to which all professors belong. It is divided into three chairs with departments and working areas as well as the Büsnau Teaching and Research Wastewater Treatment Plant (LFKW).
With a total of about 150 employees, it is one of the largest institutes of its kind in Europe.
